List three actions you remember performing in the past day or two. Explain why you performed each behavior using one or more of the approaches to understanding motivation described in the text.

What will be an ideal response?

Students should submit specific examples of behaviors that they explain through biological, learning, or humanistic theories of motivation. Biological theories explain how internal states push us toward certain behaviors and away from others (instincts, drive reduction, and arousal). Some students may report eating due to hunger, drinking due to thirst, and sleeping due to fatigue (drive reduction). Students may also suggest behaviors that involve sensation seeking (arousal). Learning theories and social theories support behaviors driven by rewards or a need to belong. Some students may present ideas like working for money or joining friends for a movie to support their social network. Humanistic theories assume that humans are driven by a need for personal growth and fulfillment. Students may present ideas such as learning something to improve their knowledge or completing tasks to build their self-esteem.
