What is a negative feedback mechanism. Give an example of a negative feedback mechanism that occurs when body temperature drops

What will be an ideal response?

A negative feedback mechanism occurs when a change causes a response that reverses the change. It is an important mechanism of homeostasis.

When the body is cold, sensory receptors recognize this and signal the brain. The brain sends
out signals that all act as a negative feedback mechanism to bring the body temperature back to a homeostatic level. Signals decrease blood flow to the skin, thus reducing the amount of heat sent to the body surface, where it would be lost to the surrounding air. At the same time, reflex contractions of smooth muscle in the skin pull on hair so that it stands up, causing "goose bumps. " Erect hair insulates the body better than hair that lies flat. With prolonged cold, the brain commands skeletal muscles to contract ten to twenty times a second. This shivering response dramatically increases heat production by muscles.
