What is the difference between criminal gangs and conflict gangs?
What will be an ideal response?
Cloward and Ohlin studied gang formation in lower-class neighorhoods. Two of the three types of gang formations they identified were criminal and conflict. The difference between the two is the opportunity structure (or lack of) available to youth. They assert that criminal gangs form in lower-class neighborhoods where there is already an opportunity structure in place, with ‘successful’ criminal role models. The economic success from this criminal structure provides them with the status they seek. A conflict gang, on the other hand, forms when the criminal opportunities are not available. So their status is gained through controlling others via violence.
