The primary change to be noted is that wars at the end of the seventeenth century were fought largely over politics instead of a direct conflict between Catholics and Protestants, as had been seen earlier. Wars were also fought for reasons of economic competition. Although the Thirty Years' War had overtones of religious confrontation, in essence, this challenge was about the power of the emperor and was therefore at least partly political.
