Compare and contrast individualism and collectivism as they relate to culture.
What will be an ideal response?
Individualism involves giving priority to personal goals, rather than to group goals. It emphasizes values that serve the self, such as feeling good, personal distinction and achievement, and independence. Many cultures such as the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and the Netherlands, are described as individualistic. Collectivism emphasizes values that serve the group by subordinating personal goals to preserve group identity, interdependence of members, and harmonious relationships. Many Eastern cultures such as China, Japan, India, and Thailand, are described as collectivistic. Mexican culture is also considered collectivistic.
