Because some words do not follow a single phonics generalization and do not contain a common word family, they must be taught as individual whole words, or sight words. Examples of such words are was, laugh, said, and is. The term sight words also refers to words that are read automatically, whether or not they follow a phonics generalization or a pattern. Examples are school, cat, dog, and teacher.
