Discuss the changes in views of the principle of uniformitarianism from James Hutton to the

present day. What new scientific data have caused this change in our views of
uniformitarianism? What will be an ideal response?

The student should discuss the classical principle of uniformitarianism (i.e., the present is the key
to the past) and also discuss how recent research has indicated that catastrophic events, including
meteorite impacts, influence the geologic record occasionally. This is part of the adaptation of a
well-accepted scientific theory to new data that provides a broader perspective on the issue.
