How do the roles and functions differ for contemporary chiefs of police and county sheriffs?
What will be an ideal response?
The roles of chiefs of police and county sheriffs are fairly similar. Both must have a flexible management style, depending on the situation and the people being managed.
One key difference is that sheriff’s departments have a number of tasks not generally performed by municipal police agencies, such as maintaining and operating county correctional facilities, serving civil processes, collecting certain taxes and conducting real estate sales, and service as bailiff of the courts. These tasks create additional challenges for the sheriff.
