The cooperative principle is used to describe how people normally behave in interactions. People have to speak in ways that others expect and consider cooperative. The four maxims are (1) the quality maxim, which assumes that verbal messages of quality and do not contain false or inadequate evidence; (2) the quantity maxim, which assumes that people will offer the right amount of information where there’s not too much or too little; (3) the relevance maxim which maintains that we expect communicators to be relevant in their communication and not get distracted or stray from their message; and (4) the manner maxim, which refers to the expectation that we will be logical and clear rather than disorderly or confusing in our communication.
