Discuss what the auto manufacturers do to increase the strength factor of a die-stamped panel and what happens to accomplish this.

What will be an ideal response?

The auto manufacturers frequently use work hardening as a tool for strengthening the parts when manufacturing cosmetic and structural panels. Depending on the strength requirement of a part, one or more shapes are formed into a panel when they are die stamped. The severity of a crown or bend can dramatically affect the resulting amount of strength a panel will have. A surface with a sharp 90-degree bend, for example, offers more strength and resistance to flexing than one that has rounded corners. A soft orgentle crowned surface offers even less than either of these two.
