Describe Plato’s allegory and what message was he trying to convey?

The gist of the story is that Gyges came upon a gold ring in a cave that allowed him to become invisible whenever he turned it on his finger. When Gyges realized the possibilities, he went to the court, seduced the queen, murdered the king, and took over the kingdom. Plato’s story makes the point that with the gift of invisibility, no one could resist all temptation to act unjustly in the name of self-interest.
