Discuss the five job characteristics cited in the text as being most significant for employee motivation

What will be an ideal response?

• In 1987, Hackman and Oldham described five job characteristics they regard as being most significant for employee motivation. Number one is skill variety, which is the degree to which jobs require a variety of different activities, skills, and talents.
• Number two is task identity, defined as the degree to which a job requires the completion of a whole task rather than bits or pieces of a project. Number three, task significance, entails the extent to which a job has a meaningful impact on others, that is to say, the importance of the job.
• Number four is Autonomy, which is defined as the degree of freedom, independence, and discretion provided by a job. And number five is feedback, which is the extent to which workers get direct and clear information about the effectiveness of their performance.
• This model takes a broader view than job analysis of the kinds of information needed in job design efforts. Hackman and Oldham developed an instrument called the Job Diagnostic Survey that allows managers to measure all of the variables contained in the theory.
