(2) The Alpine Mountain System: Series of mountains running from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and southeastern Mediterranean. Western Highlands: This region defines the western edge of the European subcontinent, extending from Portugal in the south to the highland backbone of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This region also includes England, Wales, and Scotland. These are Europe's oldest mountains and are no higher than 4,000 feet.
