Discuss the beliefs and practices of Christian asceticism.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Some Christians believed that to reach a higher level of spirituality and become closer to God, they had to separate themselves from the everyday world. These Christians practiced asceticism, or physical self-denial. Christian ascetics rejected earthly pleasures, such as comfortable living quarters, fine food and clothing, and sexual relations. The greater self-deprivation one suffered, the greater the degree of holiness and spiritual authority one was thought to have gained. As early as the third century, some Egyptian ascetics gave up all contact with the ordinary world and lived as hermits in isolated huts and desert caves, becoming the first monks. Other monks soon began living communally in monasteries.
