Describe Alzheimer's disease in terms of behavioral and cognitive symptoms and neural characteristics.
What will be an ideal response?
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia and is characterized by progressive brain deterioration and impaired memory and other cognitive abilities. A person shows trouble remembering events from the day before, misplaces items, forgets names, must search for the right word in a conversation, repeats questions and tells the same story again during a conversation, and fails to recognize acquaintances and even family members. Language, visual-spatial functioning, and reasoning are also affected, along with behavioral problems that arise such as aggression and wandering away from home. Eventually, the disease leads to death. It is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S.
At the level of the brain, two main characteristics - plaques and tangles. Plaques cluster among axon terminals and interfere with transmission, while tangles are formed inside of the neuron and are associated with the death of brain cells. These plaques and tangles move through the brain in a predictable path - they begin in the medial cortex and progress to the limbic areas then to the neocortex.

Store A has a sale: 10% off new vacuum cleaners. However, the same vacuum cleaner can be purchased at Store B for a regular price that is lower than the sale price at Store A. The fact that Store A sells more vacuums than Store B likely indicates that people have a framing bias--because the vacuums are on listed as being sale, customers think they are getting a better deal.
