What contributions are social networking sites making to criminal investigations?
What will be an ideal response?
Social networking sites can assist police in their investigations. Police can obtain search warrants to search these sites for postings, videos, contact information, photos, private messages, and proof of criminal conspiracies. Investigators are using social networking sites to research suspects, solicit crime tips, and collect evidence.
Although it violates Facebook’s terms of service for the police to go undercover online by creating fake profiles to “friend” suspects, evidence obtained this way does hold up in court. Most social networking sites require a subpoena or warrant for turning over members’ profile information and correspondence.
