Discuss the trend toward incarcerating the mentally ill. What factors led to that approach and what effects has it had on inmates as well as facility administrators?

What will be an ideal response?

In the 21st century, the corrections system has become the largest de facto delivery system for mental health care in the United States. The number of offenders with mental illness who are incarcerated rather than placed into some form of direct treatment has increased significantly as federal cuts to health spending have led to the closure of numerous mental hospitals and community clinics. This trend places a strain on facilities that now have to devote extra resources to treating mental illness and preventing outbursts among mentally ill inmates, who may become destabilized by the stresses of incarceration. Because facility resources are already stretched so thin, many mentally ill prisoners receive little to no treatment, drastically increasing the likelihood that they will commit another offense and end up back in jail shortly after their release.
