What were the effects of the agricultural transformation in the Middle Ages?
What will be an ideal response?
As more land came under agricultural use, productivity was increased by several factors. The division of land into the three-field crop rotation system instead of two-field allowed farmers to plant two crops per year instead of one, with harvests in late spring and late autumn. This system allowed one section of the land to remain fallow and recharge; in a rotating system in which different land would always be resting, the land recharged more frequently. Also, by planting different crops in the two remaining fields, different nutrients would be used at different times, thus again increasing the land's productivity. Further assisting increased production was the introduction of the heavy iron plow and the use of horses instead of oxen for draft animals. The result was a significant increase in productivity and a surplus of agricultural produce, furthering a cash economy.
