Gatekeeping is a term used for the social placement function of education. It means opening the doors of opportunity for some, and closing them to others.Functionalists would say that the doors are opened through merit.Some form of tracking is used to accomplish gatekeeping; for example, some U.S. high schools funnel students into three different educational tracks based on perceived abilities—general, college prep, or honors.
