Explain the process of conception.

What will be an ideal response?

During the second week of an ovulatory cycle, the lining of a woman's uterus is stimulated to become a blood-rich layer capable of supporting a fertilized egg and around day 12-16, ovulation occurs. When intercourse occurs during this ovulation period, about 400 of the 250 million sperm in an ejaculate will make the trip up through the uterus and into the Fallopian tube. One sperm may be successful in penetrating the egg and their DNA will merge. This is conception, also known as fertilization. The fertilized egg is now a zygote and will begin to divide and grow as it continues to travel through the Fallopian tube to eventually embed in the prepared lining of the uterus. During the next 38 weeks or so after fertilization, the uterus will expand to accommodate the growing baby.
