Compare and contrast how conservatives and progressives view the changing fabric of American families. Then, explain your point of view.
What will be an ideal response?
May include the following:
a. Conservative perspective: marriage between a man and a woman is the glue of society; the traditional nuclear model is historically successful because men and women are biologically predisposed to certain roles in the family; the move away from the traditional nuclear family is causing material and economic decline, which is in turn causing poverty, teen pregnancy, divorce, drug use, crime, and poor education.
b. Progressive perspective: families have always changed as society changes; different forms of family develop out of social contexts and the need for adaptation and survival; biology does not determine a person’s role in their family; children from diverse family structures fair no worse than children from “traditional” families; families are a reflection of social conditions, not the cause of them.
