Discuss problematic boundary issues that you have experienced with clients. How did they develop? Were they satisfactorily resolved? How? If not, why?
What will be an ideal response?
Students often struggle with boundary issues, major and minor, so they should be able to articulate numerous examples of this. The instructor may be able to prompt a more “forthcoming” exchange from students by beginning with an example from his or her own practice. The instructor should focus students’ boundary concerns around the five contexts listed below. Students should also be asked to discuss situations in which they struggled with differentiating between boundary crossings and boundary violations.
• Contact time
• Types of information to be shared
• Physical closeness when together
• Territoriality
• Emotional space
