Describe the different ways in which qualitative researchers may use and place theories in their research.
What will be an ideal response?
Qualitative researchers use theory in various ways. First, qualitative researchers use theory to identify broad concepts and themes in the literature related to the research topic that point to explanations of hypotheses. Second, qualitative researchers use theory when describing their theoretical or conceptual framework, which provides a lens through which to understand how decisions were made in a study and what explanations and concepts guide the study. Qualitative researchers may place their theories at the beginning of a study, yet theories are modified or extended based upon participants’ views. Others might place theory at the end to compare and contrast it alongside existing theories.
