Summarize recommendations for parents about helping their overweight children and adolescents to lose weight.
What will be an ideal response?
Parents should work on a healthy project and involve children and adolescents in the decision-making process. By involving children and adolescents in making decisions about the family's health, the hope is that they will begin to take responsibility for their own health. Parents should also be healthy role models for children and adolescents. What people do is more influential than what they say. Engage in physical activities with children and adolescents. Give children and adolescents choices about what they want to do to lose weight. Let them select fruits and vegetables they are willing to eat and let them choose which sport or type of exercise they would like to do. Eat healthful family meals together on a regular basis. Reduce screen time. Children and adolescents who spend large numbers of hours per day in screen time are more likely to be overweight than their counterparts who do not spend as much of their day doing these sedentary activities.
