Why will we never be able to replace the gasoline we currently use to power our vehicles in the U.S. by either ethanol made from corn or cellulosic ethanol?
What will be an ideal response?
The main problem will be the amount of landed needed to grow the vast number of crops necessary to produce enough alcohol to replace the huge amount of gasoline our vehicles consume. We would need to grow corn in an area seven times larger than we are presently farming just to replace half of the gasoline we use with cellulosic ethanol. It is more efficient to make cellulosic ethanol than corn-based ethanol. In addition, an affordable way to produce cellulosic ethanol has yet to be developed and the challenges are considerable.
