ControlLogix family members use the term examine if open (XIO) to represent the normally closed instruction. The XIO instruction tells the controller to test for an OFF condition from the referenced tag bit. If the controller sees an OFF condition, then the instruction is true. The abbreviation XIO is called the instruction's mnemonic.
