This section describes a process for examining ethical issues. Use this process to answer the following question: Is it ethical to use genetically modified corn that contains the pesticide gene Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)?
What will be an ideal response?
Identify the problem or issue and learn everything you can about it. While you are
learning everything about it, ensure your information sources are reputable. List all
possible solutions, consider legal, fi nancial, medical personal, social, and environmental
aspects. Based on the pros and cons for each solution, rank all solutions from best to
worst. One approach to this question is to provide the following table, on an 8Ā½ by
11 sheet, to the students and have them work on it in groups or individually. Have them
write the problem, in their own words, in the top left box, and the pros and cons in the
remaining boxes, including a brief citation to indicate the source of their information for
each particular pro or con.
