What are the five different groups and uses/tasks of surgical instruments?
Surgical instruments are described as ‘tools of the trade'.
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
1. Cutting and dissecting instruments—have sharp edges; used to dissect, incise, separate or excise tissue.
2. Grasping and holding instruments—used to grasp tissue to hold it in position for the surgeon to either dissect or suture without damaging the surrounding tissues.
3. Clamps—used to apply pressure to the tissue being clamped; may be crushing or non-crushing, which are used to occlude or secure tissue.
4. Retractors—used to pull or hold soft tissue, muscle and other structures aside to enable exposure of the surgical site.
5. Miscellaneous/ancillary/accessory—used as an adjunct to the major groups e.g. a sucker, mallet etc.
