How might parents react when their child is born with a disability? Why is it
important for teachers to understand how parents might react and to respond
appropriately?
What will be an ideal response?
It is not easy to predict how parents will react to birth of a disabled child. Each family member's reaction may be coupled with intense feelings and draining emotions, often leaving them confused, bewildered, and full of questions. Thus, a key for teachers to work effectively with such families is respect. Teachers should allow parents their right to express this intense and constantly varying range of emotions.
