Explain the good faith exception to the exclusionary rule.

The good faith exception to the exclusionary rule only applies to the Fourth Amendment and warrant situations. In United States v. Leon case, the Supreme Court held that illegally obtained information that would otherwise violate the exclusionary rule is nonetheless admissible as long as the magistrate was neutral and detached and the officers were not dishonest or reckless in preparing their affidavit or could not have harbored an objectively reasonable belief in the existence of probable cause. Thus, if an officer executing a warrant has an objectively reasonable belief that the warrant is valid, then the evidence may be admissible even if there is some technical defect in the warrant.
