What are “dark figure crimes”? What is the significance of dark figure crimes for crime statistics? For the general public? For victim services?
What will be an ideal response?
Dark figure crimes are unreported crimes. The NCVS estimated more than half (58%) of violent victimizations were not reported to the police in 2016. When crime victims do not report crimes, they are less likely to receive victim services, which makes it less likely that there will be a follow-up by criminal justice agencies.
