What are some important legislative and social strategies to combat drug abuse?

What will be an ideal response?

Recent drug-control legislation includes the Comprehensive Methamphetamine Control Act of 1996. It contains provisions for the seizure of chemicals used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, regulates the use of iodine (which is used in meth labs), created new reporting requirements for distributors of products containing certain key chemicals, and increased penalties for the manufacture and possession of equipment used to make controlled substances.

The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 contained a large number of drug-related provisions. It allocates drug treatment money for the creation of state and federal programs to treat drug-addicted prisoners, provides $1 billion for drug court programs for nonviolent offenders with substance abuse problems, and expands the federal death penalty to include large-scale drug trafficking and mandating life imprisonment for criminals convicted of three drug-related felonies.

Drug-control strategies have included five main policy initiatives: antidrug legislation and strict enforcement, interdiction, crop control, asset forfeiture, and antidrug education and drug treatment strategies.
