Are VLIW and EPIC processors different, or is EPIC just HP’s term for VLIW?

What will be an ideal response?

It would be quite easy to forgive someone for using the terms VLIW and EPIC interchangeably. VLIW defines the
architecture in terms of instruction length (i.e., an individual instruction is wider than the 32? or 64?bit norm
because it contains multiple operations in a bundle), whereas EPIC defines a processor in terms of what it does
(Explicitly Parallel Computing which means that it is visible to the programmer/compiler).

Explicitly parallel computing was developed by engineers at HP and it is, therefore, reasonable to consider EPIC
processors as a successor to VLIW processors. An article by Schlansker and Rau at H, EPIC: Explicitly Parallel
Instruction Computing in Computer, February 2000, says that EPIC processors have incorporated superscalar
concepts; that is, EPIC = VLIW + superscalar. EPIC is also strongly associated with predicated computing,
although that is not a particular feature of any architecture.
