Describe the naming ceremony for newborns in Sikhism.
What will be an ideal response?
Sikhism recognizes four major life-cycle events with formal rites of passage. The first ritual is a naming ceremony for newborns, held in a gurdwara when the mother has recovered from childbirth. A hymn is selected at random from the Guru Granth by an official reader, and parents choose a traditional Sikh name for newborn children that begins with the first letter on the left-hand page. (This means that well-prepared Sikh parents have to think through possible names for all the letters of the Gurmuki alphabet.) Singh ("Lion") is given as a second personal name to all males, and Kaur ("Princess") to all females. REJ: Please see the section "Sikh Ritual and Worship" for more information.
