Why might you describe Alaska as an "island"?
Looking at Alaska, it is separate from the rest of the states. There is not a railroad connecting the areas and highway transportation connecting with the lower 48 states is poor. Thus people have to get there by air or sea. So, in this respect you could almost consider the area somewhat of an island. Japan is the main market for Alaskan products, and the Trans-Alaskan pipeline has opened up new energy supplies.
