What are the effects of alcohol on decisions to engage in sexual activity and sexual performance?
What will be an ideal response?
The belief that alcohol and sex go together is certainly reinforced by popular culture. Although most of the physical and psychological effects of alcohol are actually detrimental to sexual performance and enjoyment, the key effect of alcohol that may link it to sexual behavior is "disinhibition." While under the influence, people express behaviors that would ordinarily be suppressed. Thus, unwanted intercourse, sexual violence, and practicing unsafe sex with resulting pregnancies and STDs may be direct consequences of the disinhibition effect. Alcohol affects the ability of both men and women to become sexually aroused. Men may have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection, and women may not experience vaginal lubrication. Physical sensations are likely to be dulled. Chronic users of alcohol typically experience desire and arousal difficulties.
