Why is it probably not a good idea to drink water directly from a mountain stream (i.e., untreated)

even if it appears to be unaffected by human activities?

What will be an ideal response?

It is possible the water contains Giardia. Giardia is a metamonada that induces severe diarrhea and
abdominal cramps and is spread by water contaminated with feces. Therefore, if animals have been
using the stream, there is a chance of it containing Giardia.
