• Research supports the effectiveness of notetaking and notetaking strategies. Notetaking not only provides a permanent product from which students can study, research shows that those who take notes increase their attention; active engagement; ability to paraphrase; elaborate and seek clarification; comprehension; later recall of information; and performance on tests. Generally speaking, teachers should not hand out complete notes as a replacement for students taking notes. Studies show that listening and then being given the notes is not as effective as taking notes.
• Studies have examined the effectiveness of notetaking instruction on students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Results indicate that students with high-incidence disabilities can be taught to use notetaking strategies, which in turn lead to better academic performance on tests. Research also documents that guided notes can facilitate increased learning.
