You are meeting with Baby H.'s mother to review discharge instructions. She has many questions
Baby H.'s mother asks you about cord care and circumcision care for her infant. What will
you tell her?
What will be an ideal response?
Cord care: Cleanse with soap and water around the base of the cord where it joins with the skin.
Watch for signs of infection (redness, swelling at the base, purulent drainage). The cord will fall off
after 10 to 14 days. When it falls off, there will be a small "raw" spot. Keep the area clean and dry.
The diaper should not cover the cord because it will delay drying of the cord and foster infection.
Circumcision care: Wash with warm water, pat dry, and apply petrolatum with each diaper change.
However, do not apply petrolatum if Plastibell was used. Watch for signs of infection. It is normal
to see yellow tissue as the skin heals. Change diaper every 4 hours to prevent it from sticking to
the penis.
