Discuss the role of deterrence in the criminal justice system. What are two types of deterrence? How well does the U.S. criminal justice system currently accomplish these two forms of deterrence?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary but should include a description of general deterrence. General deterrence focuses on the population as a whole, and whether individuals are less likely to commit criminal acts for fear of being punished. Specific deterrence focuses on whether the experience of punishment in general (particularly incarceration) makes it less likely that an ex-prisoner will commit crimes in the future. Regarding specific deterrence, the U.S. criminal justice system may be viewed as "criminogenic" in that those who have been through the U.S. prison system are often more likely to recidivate.
