What was the reaction of Liberal Nationalism to the unification of Italy?
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. The constitutional monarchy that was established was a far cry from the democratic ideal envisioned by Mazzini and Garibaldi. When Mazzini died in 1872, he was dismayed by pragmatic version of his dream realized by Cavour. Although new Italy was a constitutional monarchy with universal male suffrage, the king and his ministers were more powerful than the parliament. Illiteracy and poverty, especially in the southern half of the country, persisted. In 1870, most subjects of King Victor Emmanuel spoke not standard Italian but dialects, and retained strong regional identities. In these senses, Liberal Nationalism was deeply disappointed by the failure to make the Italy of their ideals.
