Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) was developed by John Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center to be used as a pain reduction treatment for chronically ill patients. MBSR consists of an 8-week group program of up to 35 participants who meet weekly for 2 to 3 hours each week. Between classes 6 and 7, participants go on a 6-hour, weekend, silent retreat. Clients are engaged in an intensive training program in a number of mindful practices, such as yoga and meditation. Mindfulness has been expanded to treat psychological pain as well as physical pain. Mindfulness approaches have been found to reduce the frequency of panic attacks and avoidance in panic disorder (Miller, Fletcher, & Kabat-Zinn, 1995) and binge-eating episodes associated with eating disorders (Kristheller & Hallett, 1999).
