Have you experienced people judging you based on your physical characteristics, behaviors, and/or choices? If so, how did you respond or react? If not, how do you imagine this experience would affect the people judged? How might others perceive you as different?

What will be an ideal response?

Have students recall a particular time where they felt judged. Such feelings may have emerged because of judgments based on gender, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, social class, or national and/or ethnic origin. If students have difficulty identifying such an experience, guide them to explore a time that they were judged based on a decision that was important to them such as choosing to quit an activity, club, or organization; or breaking up with a significant other; or standing up to peers by perhaps choosing to befriend someone not in the "popular crowd". The key here is to support students to develop an awareness of how their subjective judgments may affect others. People may rush to judgment without all of the information. How can students guard against this propensity?
