Compare and contrast revolution with revolutionary movements.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but should include that the two concepts are clearly distinct. The idea of revolution—whether one uses the broader or narrower definition—stands apart analytically from such kindred forms of contentious politics as social movements, popular rebellions, riots, wars, and coups d’etat. Revolutionary movements may create revolutionary situations, and these often result in civil wars, and revolutionary movements bring about actual revolutions if they successfully seize state power. Also, social movements that initially seek reforms within the existing political system may become revolutionary movements should they ultimately attempt to overthrow the state, which often happens when the political order breaks down or when the state persistently refuses to implement the reforms desired by such movements. Revolutions, in turn, often bring about interstate wars, typically because foreign states try to destroy those revolutionary movements or regimes they consider threats. Revolutions (especially social revolutions) are a distinct and relatively rare form of contentious politics; they are often connected, whether as cause or consequence, with other and more frequently recurring types of contention.
