Briefly explain how deep trenches form

What will be an ideal response?

Bending of the downgoing (subducting) oceanic plate creates a roughly v-shaped gap near the surface between the two lithospheric plates. This gap or trench fills with sediments scraped off the downgoing plate and material eroded from the volcanic arc on the overriding plate.
