Social Security is projected to have significant budget shortfalls in the future. What would you suggest could be done to enhance the financial stability of people who are about to retire and may be counting on Social Security to finance them at least partially in their postwork years?

What will be an ideal response?

Many answers are possible. The Social Security tax cap could be raised or eliminated. The retirement age could continue to increase as life expectancy does. More information could be presented to employers to dispel myths about older workers. We could encourage people to continue to work as long as they are physically and mentally capable and wish to do so. We could cut the benefits people receive from Social Security or privatize the system, though both of those suggestions have clear unwanted side effects. We could also increase the percentage of tax people pay for Social Security, but that would likely cause problems as well. Paying more people a higher wage or salary and educating them on investment and savings options could also make a dent.
