Compare and contrast the beliefs and methods of anarchists and pacifists.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Anarchists sought to overthrow the political order and looked forward to a world of shared prosperity, political power, and the destruction of the state. Anarchists were varied in their approach: from education and propaganda to terrorism and assassination. Some anarchists thought that killing a powerful political leader would strike a blow against state repression.Where the anarchists believed in using violent means to achieve peaceful ends, pacifists rejected war and violence entirely. As technology and militarism advanced, the prospect of war became ever more horrific. The millions spent on military could be spent on better housing, sanitation, cultural facilities, and education, according to the pacifists. The pacifist movement led to the establishment of international treaties on the conduct of war known collectively as the Geneva Conventions; rules that attempted to mitigate the horrors of war.
