Are leaders born or made, that is the question? In the sense that leadership (just as followership) is a
career-long practice, it is evident that leaders are tested and refined in practice. However, it seems
beyond reasonable doubt that specific qualities of personality, intellect, education, upbringing and
commitment predispose some human beings to display leadership behaviour that commends itself to
others, initiating repeated cycles of personal opportunity to perform and advance. The paradox,
perhaps, is that many of the world’s most celebrated leaders from Henry Ford to Richard Branson to
Akio Morita (Sony) to Steve Jobs pursued their own ambitions without first becoming part of an
established enterprise. Accordingly, they may never have displayed leadership qualities that can be
inculcated through education and systematic career development through the ranks of junior, middle,
then senior management.
