What are maquiladoras, how and why have they been so successful in Mexico, and what are the controversies surrounding them?
What will be an ideal response?
Maquiladoras are assembly plants that line the Mexican side of the border with the U.S. When NAFTA was formed, this permitted more jobs to leave the U.S. for Mexican maquiladoras. The main controversies surrounding maquiladoras are the lack of regulations ? in particular labor and safety regulations ? the exploitation of young (and usually female labor in Mexico and the loss of quality manufacturing jobs in the United States.

If the surface stream water at Sample Site 3 is contaminated by the entrance of groundwater, could the pollution have come from either the waste pit or the pasture? How might you tell which is the case?
The question is based on Figure 25-3, a map of a hypothetical landscape with an effluent stream flowing from northeast to southwest. Water table contours are drawn at 2-foot intervals and flow lines show the direction of groundwater movement at the top of the zone of saturation. The waste pit in the north was dug down to a depth just slightly above the water table in that location. A fenced pasture for grazing livestock is in the east. Two wells are shown, and the locations of three water quality sampling sites along the stream are indicated. What will be an ideal response?
