How can disk drives be made faster (i.e., what options are available to the manufacturer)?

What will be an ideal response?

With difficulty – if at all! We can increase capacity by reducing the size of domains, the size of the read/write head, and the surface to head air?gap. To increase speed, we have to increase both the rotational speed of the disk and the track?to?track stepping speed of the arm. That is difficult. Increasing disk speeds above the current maximum of 15,000 rpm requires a lot of energy (energy increases with the square of the disk’s speed). Similarly, it is unlikely that the speed of head assemblies can be much increased. Multiple arms could be used to reduce access time by performing a parallel access. The future of fast storage lies in semiconductor storage.
